Author Krista Fink Named Finalist in National Book Competition

(Terra Alta, WV)Charleston resident Krista Fink was honored today when USABookNews.com, the premiere online magazine and review website for mainstream and independent publishing houses, announced the winners and finalists of THE NATIONAL “BEST BOOKS” 2008 AWARDS (NBBA). Over 500 winners and finalists were announced in over 140 categories covering print and audio books. Awards were presented for titles published in 2008 and late 2007.

Jeff Keen, President and CEO of USABookNews.com, said this year’s contest yielded an unprecedented number of entries, which were then narrowed down to over 500 winners and finalists.

Krista Fink is a survivor of domestic violence and a high school teacher.  She shares her experiences with her students so they will understand that it can happen to anyone, and that no one deserves to be abused. She gives presentations to medical professionals and advocates and is also available to speak to community organizations and educational institutions. Krista serves on the board of directors at the YWCA where she received support while recovering from her abuse, and she is active in fundraising for victims of domestic violence.

Only through her own determination and the help of the YWCA Resolve Family Abuse Program was Krista able to heal from her ordeal. This book recounts her personal experiences in hopes of giving even one person the lifeline of help they need to climb out of their own abyss.

“It’s wonderful to compete with the larger publishing houses in a major competition like this,” says Headline Books president, Cathy Teets. “Krista Fink has opened doors for many who find themselves in a similar situation and is certainly deserving of this prestigious honor.” Headline Books, Inc. was a major winner with seven of its titles named Award-Winning Finalists in this year’s competition.

Keen says of the awards, now in their fifth year, “The 2008 results represent a phenomenal mix of books from a wide array of publishers throughout the United States.

As an executive in the publishing PR and marketing industry and president and CEO of JPX Media, I wanted to create an awards competition that recognized books in their publication year rather than months after the original launch window. With a full publicity and marketing campaign promoting the results of NBBA, this year’s winners and finalists will gain additional media coverage for the upcoming holiday retail season.”

Winners and finalists traversed the publishing landscape: Simon & Schuster, Tarcher/Penguin, HarperCollins, Hyperion, St. Martin’s Press, McGraw-Hill, John Wiley & Sons, Headline Books, Inc. & hundreds of independent titles contributed to this year’s outstanding NBBA competition. Keen adds, “NBBA’s success begins with the enthusiastic participation of publishers and continues with our distinguished panel of industry judges who bring to the table their extensive editorial, PR, marketing, and design expertise.”

Subject: Silent No More—New Book Released on Domestic Violence

(Terra Alta)— From a broken relationship to the excitement of a handsome adventurer, author Krista Fink stepped into an abyss of abuse and remained in a torturous marriage until she could be silent no more. After five years, and three attempts to leave, she made the final break. Only through her own determination and the help of the YWCA Resolve Family Abuse Program was Krista able to heal from her ordeal. This book recounts her personal experiences—no holds barred—in hopes of reaching even one person in a similar situation and giving them the lifeline of help they need to climb out of their own abyss.

Domestic violence statistics are staggering. 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime; In 2001, there were 691,710 nonfatal incidents of violence committed by the current or former spouses, boyfriends, or girlfriends of the victims, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

3 in 4 women over age 18 who reported being raped were physically assaulted by current or former husband, cohabitating partner, or date and marital rape accounts for 25% of all rapes, affecting 75,000 women each year. Findings from the National Violence Against Women Survey (1998) and the costs of intimate partner violence annually exceeds $5.8 billion, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Krista’s family became worried after seeing warning signs in her relationship, but Krista was dismissive of their concern and attempts to intervene. After knowing her abuser for less than a year they were married, even though Krista had started to have some nagging concerns. When she eventually recognized that she was in an unhealthy relationship, she sought the help of counselors and her abusers’ family, but was too embarrassed to admit to her family and friends the extent of the abuse.

After five years, and three attempts to leave, she made the final break. She faced attorneys who demanded bankruptcy was the only answer to the enormous debt incurred during her marriage. Many people in “the system” neglected to hold her abuser accountable. But through the help of the Resolve Family Abuse Program, and her determination, Krista has been able to heal through speaking and writing about her experiences.

Krista Fink is a survivor of domestic violence and a high school teacher. She shares her experiences with her students so they will understand that it can happen to anyone, and that no one deserves to be abused. She gives presentations to medical professionals and advocates and is also available to speak to community organizations and educational institutions. She serves on the board of directors at the YWCA where she received support while recovering from her abuse, and she is active in fundraising for victims of domestic violence. Krista lives with her new husband, Brandon, and they are expecting their first child this year.
